2nd CDE club meeting held on 11th January 2006 at masot beach resorts, kannur. Dr Sony Jacob gave lectures on the subject- Local anesthetic techeniques.
A state level CDE programme held on 29th January 2006 at kamala inter national kannur. The symposium was on the topic- ORAL LESIONS CLINICAL AND RAIOLOGICAL MANIFESTATIONS. The faculties are Dr Pramoth john and Dr Lakshmi Kanth chathra.

Continuing Education(CE) or Continuing Professional Development is part and parcel of any growing /developing component of a society or profession. With this view/idea in mind, if we look Back to the history or early days of dentistry, before the establishment of dental schools/colleges,training was primarily on an apprenticeship basis. As with any apprenticeship this novice would work under an experienced master- craftsman in return for instruction and ‘hands-on training’.
This was usually a one-on-one or very small group situations and the role of the master was that of a Mentor. The Webster’s New Word Dictionary defines the word mentor as a wise teacher, advisor or coach. The mentor would demonstrate a procedure for the apprentice, then watch carefully while the apprentice performed the technique giving advice and criticism and evaluating the outcome.
This would be repeated again and again until the student could demonstrate a through knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge in different circumstances/ cases. Even today individual or small group instruction, particularly in teaching manual dexterity skills, is recognized as one of the best methods for imparting knowledge. Unfortunately, the sheer size of dental school classes and the limited curricular time and the number of faculty, make true mentoring of every student extremely difficult if not an impossible task. Because of this, a large percentage of our professionals must rely on various types of continuing education courses to further their knowledge and improve their skills.
IDA North Malabar Branch is well known for its all-round excellence in various activities. Our members have enthusiastically conducted service camps for poor and the destitutes,educational programmes for the school, children, teachers and public and also state conferences to up-grade the knowledge of professionals. We are a group of committed and dedicated practioners who meet regularly under the banner of CDE programmes. We have clinically proficient mentors who perform various treatment producers on patients, give talks on various topics, thus keeping us abreast with the vast development that keeps taking place in the field of dentistry. The CDE/CPD thus has a goal of constantly improving our level of professional skills, to its highest level by evaluating newer dental materials, equipments and treatment techniques.
As CDE chairman of the North Malabar IDA, I strongly recommend these CDE programmes, which will help our doctors to impart their best to the society.
CDE REPORT
1)IDA North Malabar Branch opened its chapter of continuing dental education programme(CDEP) on !5-12-02. by Dr .Mohan Chandran, Principal,ACME ,Pariyaram and the inaugural talk was on STRESS MANAGEMENT amongst dental professionals.Dr Mohan Chandran in his speech ,emphasised the vital point of managing stress related problems encountered by dental professionals and its remedial measures. The programme was attended by as many as 50 dental surgeons at Hotel Mascot ,Kannur.
2) On 2-2-03 at Hotel Mascot after the GB meeting, Dr Roshit MDS,Maxillofacial surgeon of Dhanalakshmy Hospital ,Kannur,gave us deliberations and the topic was “Maxillo facial surgery an overview”.
3)At Hotel Malabar Residency ,Kannur,on 6-4-03 Dr Premanand Kamath MDS,spoke all about AMALGAM in restorative dentistry.He gave us the latest status of amalgam in dentistry.He stressed on the importance of the age old amalgam and concluded that it is better than any other restorative material if appropriate measures and right indication are applied.The response was good and 45 members attended.
4)Our own member Dr Krishnan, after attending,reviewing and participating in local,state,national and international levels, spoke on SPORTS DENTISTRY on 25-5-03 &with help of audio visual aids demonstrated the fabrication of mouth guards.
5)On 25th June2003 at Hotel Mascot beach resort,the CDE programme opened up with Dr .Sripathi Rao`s topic"Management of medically compromised patients" in routine dental practice.Dr.Sripathy Rao is a well known oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Principal Yenepoya dental college,Mangalore.The topic touched on all aspects of managing medically compromised condition during dental procedures.A printed hand-out was circulated amongst the participants,with important details such as management,emergency drugs,prophylactic antibiotic regime etc.
Second faculty of the day was our own member Dr Sony Jacob MDS Asso.prof of ACME, Pariyaram.He spoke on" Prevention and management of surgical complications.There were active discussions after both the talks.
State level CDE on TMJ
6)August 3,2003 was a memorable day for the IDA North Malabar Branch.We had a state level CDE sponsored by the Colgate Palmolive ,India. The CDE was attended by postgraduate students,interns from various dental colleges of Kerala and Karnataka,ENT surgeons and private dental practitioners. We had a strong faculty to deal with the various aspects of TMJ and North Malabar Branch is proud to have conducted this valuable programme.
The programme was chaired by IDA State President Dr.Nandakumar.The gathering was welcomed by our President and the CDE programme was inaugurated by our Past National Vice President Dr.M.C.Mohan, by lighting the traditional lamp.State secretary Dr Alias Thomas and Past State President Dr.Babu John felicitated.CDE chairman Dr. Mathai Joseph proposed Vote of thanks.
Dr.Sony Jacob Asso:Prof ,Dept of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery ,Pariyaram Medical college spoke on the anatomy of TMJ.The descriptions,illustrations and narrations were very impressive.
Dr .Suma Samuel ,Asst Prof, Dept of Oral and Maxillo facial Surgery,Pariyaram Medical college enlightened the listeners with the radiological interpretations of the TMJ,the newer and recent concept of imaging the joint and also the different modalities available now to evaluate the TMJ.
Dr.S.P.Katti ,Prof and HOD,Dept of Prosthodontics,Hassanamba dental college,Hassan spoke on the various treatment options available now for the dysfunctional joint.
After tea break Dr, Ramananda Shetty,Principal of Govt Dental College ,Bangalore and HOD of Prosthodontics dept delivered a speech on Articulators and Facebow-a detailed explanation on the concept of occlusion and associated functions of TMJ was explained.
Management of TMJ associated problems by DR C.L. Satish Babu, Prof & HOD Dept of Prosthodontics,VS Dental college Bangalore,was discussed in detail.
Dr. Varghese Mani, Prof & HOD ,Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,Govt Dental college ,Calicut spoke extensively about his experience in the surgical aspects in managing various TMJ dysfunctions.He also explained a new surgical procedure by distracting the pterygoid plate to manageTMJ dysfunctions,which attracted a volley of questions from the ENT surgeons present.There was healthy discussions regarding the pros and cons of the method.
The Othodontic considerations regarding TMJ was discussed with illustrations by Dr.M.Jayaram ,Prof and HOD Dept of Orthodontics ,Govt Dental College ,Calicut.
Dr.C.K. Asokan,Prof and HOD Dept of Periodontics, Century Institute of Dental Sciences and Research ,Poinachi,Kasargode,elaborated on the periodontal aspects related to TMJ dysfunctions.
There were healthy discussions and we had a good number of post graduate students contributing constructively to these discussions.It was an event succesfully conducted by the North Malabar Branch and infact it will be trendsetter to all future symposiums

7)The CDE on paedodontics was held on 4th sept`03 at Dhanalakshmi Hospital, Kannur with an august gathering of faculty in paedodontics, our own members, post graduates from dental college. Dr Abdul Samad, president IDA North Malabar Branch welcomed the Chief guest Dr C.M Dhaninjayan, Managing Director, Dhanalkshmi Hospital, Dr Shyam Bhat, Vice Principal, Prof. & HOD Dept. of Paedododntics, Yenepoyya Dental College, Mangalore, Dr Anupam Kumar MDS Asst.Professor, Dept. of Paedodontics, Dr Abdul Hafeez., MDS Paedodontist from Malappuram, the sponsors & members. Dr.C.M.Dhaninjayan,M.S in his inaugural speech, stressed the relevance of dental care of milk teeth & its futuristic value. Dr O.V.Sanal gave the vote of thanks in which he specifically thanked the team effort of Dr Roshith, MDS, Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon of Dhanalakshmi Hospital & their staff sponsorers Listrine-Pfizer. Dr Shyam Bhat stressed the importance of interceptive orthodontics for General Practitioners, Dr Anupam Kumar dealt with endodontics in children. Dr.Abdul Hafeez explained the details of space maintenance in paediatric dentistry & its day to day effects, fabrication procedures. In the afternoon session, fabrication of fixed space maintenanace,soldering, etc. were informative. The CDE on Paedodontics ended with enough clinical information."CDE ON ORTHODONTICS
8)The Cde on Orthodontics was held on 26th Oct at Mascot Beach Resort with a moderate attendance of 33 participants of our branch. The President welcomed the faculty Dr Subrayya Mogra , Prof ,Dept of Orthodontics,C.O.D.S. ,K.M.C. Mangalore and the members.Dr Subrayya mogra was introduced by Cde chairman Dr Mathai Joseph
Orthodontics for general practitioners was the topic for deliberation and Dr. S.Mogra
Explained the limitations and avenues for removable appliances in orthodontic practice. The duties of visiting orthodontist and responsibility of concerned general practitioner were included in the interaction discussions.
Colgate – Palmolive sponsored Cde ended with enough clinical orthodontic information.
